Why Do The Sixties Keep Coming Back?

More than fifty years have passed since the Sixties began to swing, changing the arts, society and fashion for good.

So you would think fashion might have caught onto a new era of groundbreaking fresh style. That is not the case.

Everywhere you look you see 1960s fashion still gracing our streets. Look into your own wardrobe and I challenge you not to find a pair of knee high boots or a classic shift dress.

Fashion Week’s around the world are almost saturated with sixties style every year. You cannot avoid the occasional animal print or skin tight legging on the catwalk.

Look at this year’s Autumn/Winter fashion, high street shops are bursting at the seams with faux fur coats and leopard print garments.

Why do the sixties keep coming back in fashion?

The constant reinvention of an era is nothing new to the fashion industry, English author Geoffrey Chaucer once said: "There’s never a new fashion but it’s old."

Chaucer could never be more accurate. In the early 20th century Dior’s 'New Look' introduced the 'waspie' waist which was an imitation of Queen Elizabeth I’s heavily cinched waist line, a look which has again been revived by celebrities like burlesque artist Dita Von Teese.

Over a century women have struggled to be equal, but in that time fashion has responded to social changes.

Post World War I saw the introduction of equal rights for women. Many cut their hair short in a political statement and started to openly wear make-up.

Women were blurring the lines between their male opposition proving they can work in factories and hold their own in times of anguish.

This was one of the first acts of female liberation that would be a stepping stone to future movements.

Mass production was now in full swing after World War II and Coco Chanel was the big name in fashion with her signature tweed suits and the birth of the 'little black dress'.

Coco Chanel once said: "Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must also be able to move, to get into a car without bursting their seams! Clothes must have a natural shape."

Fashion transformed after the war and it was all about complimenting the feminine physique.

Writer Fred Davis, Fashion, Culture, and Identity, mentions how even attitudes were changing in a want to be fashionable, he said: "The Great Depression that followed seems to have contributed a perverse luster to its chic allure."

After the Second World War soldiers were coming home to their partners, getting married and starting families which sparked the baby boom.

The post war baby boom saw an influx of young adults making their mark on the 60s. They had money to spend, class divides were at a low and there was a demand for a new funky fashion.

Author Hilary Fawcett explains the allure of the 60s, she said: "The period is one of high modernity, optimism, innovation as represented in the expanding media and commodity culture of the era."

Music was more influential and rebellious than ever before. Bands like The Rolling Stones and The Who were the children of the baby boom with new ideas, fashions, and did it all with a Rock n' Roll attitude.

Author Sean Egan, The Rolling Stones and the making of Let it Bleed, writes about the Stones in the sixties: "It was the year when the establishment of Great Britain decided to break the band who epitomised and figure headed a counter-culture that was threatening the censorious and authoritarian values of the old order."

By the mid 60s new freedoms were coming into power. The contraceptive pill was introduced, homosexuality was legalised and feminism was fighting hard.

A generation was experiencing a new wave of modernity. Drug use was becoming more frequent, people were more sexually liberated and fashion was making its stamp on the world.

The introduction of the department store was a leader on the high street for fashion but British designer Mary Quant introduced a whole new shop in 1955...the boutique.

In the book The Face of Fashion, Jennifer Craik said: "In 1964, Courreges launched his 'space age' clothes and Mary Quant her pop clothes. Both collections offered a new look for teenagers and young people."

Quant wanted the unconventional look in her clothes, accessories, and shop window.

Her shop window was famous for its quirky mannequin poses and 'most up-to-date hair cuts'.

She could give young people cheap 'throwaway' fashion; mass produced clothes that could be sold at an affordable price.

Craik describes fashion as 'no longer elite' making fashion available to all classes.

Writer Samantha Bleikorn, The Mini Mod Sixties Book, said in her book: "For young women, the rebellion against the hobbling effects of long skirts and stiletto heels that had been key parts of the haute couture that ruled fashion for as long as any teenager or twenty-some-thing could remember."

Youth culture was breaking old conventions and designers like Mary Quant were taking notice.

Her boutique, Bazaar, sold everything from vest dresses to feather boas and colours of metallic’s to lustrous primaries. She described her boutique as a 'little shop with funky clothes' and it would instantly catch on.

In the late 50s and early 60s a group called the 'Chelsea Set' emerged. They were young trendy females who embraced the fashion scene.

An article in the Independent interviews Diana Melly, a past employee of Quant’s, she said: "Mary was the undisputed queen of the "Chelsea Set". Bazaar was one of its main meeting places. That was part of the reason why I wanted to work there."

Bazaar was not the only boutique around; Biba was one of the biggest shops of London in the 60s. It was full of psychedelic patterned clothes with tiny waists.

The tiny waist phenomenon was pastiche of the Elizabethan times but is more fitting to the waif like models females were aspiring to be like in the 60s.

British model Twiggy is a mod symbol of the sixties who had a waif like frame that rejected the usual womanly figures that were seen before in the media like Sophia Loren and Betty Grable.

Author Hilary Fawcett explains how she succumbed to the fashion ideals of the 60s, she said: "In looking at photographs of myself through 1960s I see the process of shrinking from a voluptuous fourteen year old to a very skinny eighteen year-old.

"I was not alone and the cult of excessive thinness was all pervasive. This was the first generation of young people for whom fashion models had succeeded actresses and royalty as the defining female type."

The obsession to be thin and fit unattainable ideals is just like today’s society. We are constantly bombarded with edited images of beautiful models in magazines selling the latest fashions.

Modern day supermodels like Kate Moss and Agnes Deyn share the same waif like androgynous features of 60s model twiggy.

This was a popular look throughout the 60s that even Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick took on.

The IT girl turned actor embodied everything fashion and was a face of new wave art.

Futurism and geometric patterns were everywhere in fashion, art, and architecture.
Pop Art was a new and controversial movement that caught on in the industry by artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Author Jill Condra (2008) said: "The 1960s saw an explosion of styles in art...Optical Art.

"The most famous example of Op art crossing over into fashion was the Mondrian dress designed by Yves Saint-Laurent in 1965.

"He took popular blocky paintings of twentieth century Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and basically wrapped them around the female form in a simple shift dress."

Sixties fashion is easy to spot. Leather knee high boots, miniskirts and tiny shifts dresses almost saturated swinging London’s youth culture.

An article on BBC.co.uk by Steven Bannon talks about how the media perceived the new changes in the sixties, he said: "The Pill and the miniskirt seemed to promise some kind of utopia, providing the maximum of temptation with the maximum of opportunity."

Women weren’t afraid to take a risk with make-up and false lashes, emphasising their femininity more than ever.

Come the 16th century people were branded 'shameful' by wearing outdated clothes just like how it is today in our fashion conscious world.

In the 60s feminism was strong and many women protested against fashion as they saw it to be 'restricting' and 'constructing' a false version of femininity.

In the book Fashion as Communication, Malcolm Barnard said: "According to Evans and Thornton, in the late 1960s and early 1970s 'the entire package of fashion was condemned by feminists'.

"Fashion and clothing were seen as constricting and that had to be escaped from or got out of."

But where there was protest there was rebellion.

One of the most memorable and 'outrageous' shops of rebellion in the 60s was Vivienne Westwood’s, SEX.

It was a place for punk clothing visited by bands like The Rolling Stones to promote their rebellious image by waiting paparazzi.

Musicians made the Mod and Rocker fashion popular which is still worn by young people today. The Beatles were all about the Mod look with trendy haircuts, smart shirts, and khaki parker coats.

Shari Benstock, On Fashion, talks about how clothes once thought of as 'poor' were now fashionable: "The 1960s exhibited a massive attempt to overthrow the cultural codes of the past, and fashion became an important element of the construction of new identities.

"Antifashion in clothes and attire became fashionable, and the subversion of overthrowing of cultural codes be a norm."

Today bands like Oasis and Blur are almost a tribute replication of the Northern working class generation of the 60s, still embracing the longer haircuts and classic Fred Perry T-shirts but with denim drainpipes.

The popularity of rebellion, music and fashion in the 60s complimented each other perfectly and has been created and modified by a modern society that has been inspired by the most influential decade in a century.

But the image of the 'swinging sixties' that is perceived in the world is not all what it seems.

Author Stella Bruzzi, Fashion Cultures, says: "The landscape of fashion in the twentieth century was mediated by film, photography and the fashion press."

Most of the blame for these idealistic 60s images of sexual promiscuity, drugs and rock n' roll was all controlled by the media into something desirable and worth profiting from.

Hilary Fawcett says how the 60s was more of a 'fantasy' than reality: "The fantasy of the 1960s as a period of free love, equality and pain free hedonism feeds in to the way in which these fashions are consumed."

It is certain the media shaped the 60s into a desirable decade that would in turn make the industry money but it could be said that the media simply highlighted what the public wanted to see.

Sixties magazines like Honey and Roxy were dedicated to fashion like our modern day Look magazine or Glamour.

Much like newspapers and films the public in sense control what is seen. Readers and viewers buy into mass production of what it is they desire and in turn companies respond to their audience’s wishes.

In the 21st century mass production has never been more popular with shop like Primark and Topshop. It is because of the public’s buying habits that 1960s fashion keeps repeating itself.

Jean Baudrillard (1993) says fashion is always retro and it is simply 'an immediate and total recycling of past form'.

We succumb to the 1960s ideals, changes and adopt it into our lives.

The 60s was a time of female liberation and finding freedom to express yourself on many levels which continues more than ever to this day but we think more in 'codes' of what message we are trying to project in our clothes.

Present young generations are probably unaware of how heavily influential the 60s is to music and fashion of today.

Without every small but important step from the Great Depression to the Post War Baby Boom we may have seen a more conservative, repressed 1960s.

Instead, the new wave youth culture of the 60s left a legacy of modern day liberated generations who share an ode to the swinging era and celebrate it in pastiche fashion.

H&M has collaborated with legendary fashion brand Versace for an iconic collection this Autumn.

Designed by creative director Donatella Versace, the one-off collection reverts back to the vibrant heritage of the brand, lots of leather, print, colour, and made from lavish materials at H&M prices.

Not only is this collection just for men and women, Versace are making selected pieces for the home. Who wouldn't want a piece of fashion history?

The exclusive collection hit stores from November 17 and is available online (but you have to be quick!)

Oh, and if that is not enough...Donatella has also designed a pre-spring collection for H&M available online from January 19 2012.

Andy Warhol has been branded one of the most influential artists of all time for founding the new wave art movement, pop art.

Warhol talents stretched further than just a painter. He was a renowned filmmaker, print maker, and also was an author of several books.

As a young boy born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1928), Warhol became an outcast at school after contracting Cholera in Third Grade. The months spent in recovery gave Warhol a fear Hospitals and he later became a hypochondriac. He spent most of his time at home with his Mother and fantasised about the Hollywood lifestyle often gathering magazine cut-outs of movie-stars.

In 1949 Warhol realised his passion for art and went on to study commercial art at the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Here he experimented with modest ink drawings of shoes which would be taken with him when he moved to New York in 1949.

Warhol’s flare for art began to peak and RCA records employed him to design LP covers. During the first few years of the 1950s Warhol was starting to imagine a new commercial art movement which would be branded, pop art.

The famous pop art collection first exhibited at numerous New York galleries. In the exhibition was iconic works of 100 Soup Cans and 100 Coke Bottles. In the 60s both the soup cans and the Coke bottles were later turned into silk-screened prints and would both auction for millions in future years.

Warhol’s work was heavily criticised as ‘unoriginal’ but the world was taking notice and soon the birth of the Factory appeared in the early 60s.

The aluminium lined Factory was a place for artistic, upcoming underground bohemians, who basked in the swinging decade. Warhol branded his people “Superstars” which included Ultra Violet, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and Edie Sedgwick to name a few. More than 2000 photos of the Factory were shot during its time.

The Hollywood fantasy lifestyle was quickly coming true for Warhol as he regularly mixed with the famous and even carried his love into paintings making further silk-screened prints of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.

Filmmaking became a usual scene in the Factory where Warhol would direct hundreds of critically acclaimed films like Poor Little Rich Girl, featuring Edie Sedgwick, and the well-known Chelsea Girls.

Some critics coined Warhol’s films as pornographic as themes of nudity, homosexuality, and fetishism often came into play.

The Factory was thriving full of eccentrics many who were under the influence of drugs. But all that was short lived when Valerie Solanas entered the Factory shooting Warhol in the chest. The attacked was sparked after being rejected from the Factory when asking for the script she wrote for S.C.U.M Manifesto and was never given payment for her appearance in the Warhol film I, a Man. Solanas stressed she thought Warhol had “too much control” on her life, which was a popular scenario found with other “Superstars” of the Factory, like Edie Sedgwick who committed suicide aged 28.

Since the attack the Factory became quiet and gained unwanted media attention which aided the demise of the art world’s hub.

From the 70s onward Warhol’s media image decreased and was known for doing business collaborations for musician album covers like Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin. He also published his book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.

Warhol died in February 1987 from a persisting gallbladder problem. He gave the majority of his earnings to the “advancement of the visual arts”. Most of his work now lies in museums sharing a creative legacy around the world.

Profile: Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson was the first writer to popularise Gonzo Journalism, a form of New Journalism that was used in the 1960s.

Thompson was born in Kentucky, 1937, with 2 brothers and later lost his father at 14 years old. His mother, Virginia, struggled to cope with her husband’s death leading to alcoholism.

Although Thompson was often in trouble at school he showed great potential as a writer. In 1952 he was accepted by a school-sponsor to be a member of the Anthaeum Literary where he regularly contributed articles to the literary yearbook.

The damaging effects of Thompson’s childhood resulted in several troubles with the law including an arrest for assisting on a robbery in 1956. He served 30 days in prison.

As part of Thompson’s sentence he served in the US Air Force and started to write sport journalism for The Command Courier. In 1958, Thompson was discharged from his service and relocated to New York City to study Creative Writing at Columbia University School of General Studies.

During the time Thompson was in New York he worked for Time as a $51 a week copy boy. After being fired from Time for insubordination and then from The Middletown Daily Record for an angry dispute with a candy machine, Thompson moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Thompson’s endeavour in San Juan to work for El Sportivo quickly ended when the magazine folded before it had a chance to begin. However, his move to Puerto Rico was not all lost as he frequently travelled throughout South America and to the Caribbean where he would work for numerous local newspapers.

When returning to America in 1961 Thompson started to work as a security guard for Big Sur Hot Springs. His position only lasted 8 months but the 1960s was the beginning of for coming opportunity.

During the 60s Thompson wrote two novels, Prince Jellyfish and The Rum Diary. Prince Jellyfish had little success and The Rum Diary did not get published till 1998.

In 1965, the editor of The Nation, gave Thompson a break to write his story about
the Californian-Hells Angels. Once the article was published in May of ’67 Thompson was severely ‘stomped’ by the Hells Angels after they believed he was using them to seek royalties. His book Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs was released and praised by The New York Times.

Thompson’s new success found him working for prestigious magazines like Esquire, Rolling Stone and Times Magazine.

He famously wrote the article “The Hashbury is the Capital of the Hippies” in ’67 for the Times that stated the Hippie Counter-Culture had lost its political stance and become nothing more than a mere drug den for newcomers.

The 60s was almost over and Thompson’s success was at a high. His controversial drugs use was no secret and his extravagant writing style gave Thompson a signature.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was published in 1972 and received outstanding acclaim. The book’s character, Raoul Duke, plays an exaggerate likeness to Thompson being an erratic journalist with a tendency to dabble in drugs. The next instalment of his novels was Fear and Loathing on the Camping Trail 1972.

From the 1980s onwards Thompson released the novel The Curse of Lono and a small film adaption of his early work, Where the Buffalo Roam, starring Bill Murray. Unfortunately since the success of Fear and Loathing Thompson’s later work did not resurface his full potential once showed.

The last book Thompson wrote was Kingdom of Fear. It was a collection of notes and stories he had gathered over the years. Many were angry statements against the so-called ‘American Dream’.

Gonzo Journalism is now recognised throughout the world and Hunter S. Thompson was its creator. In 1998, Director Terry Gilliam, released the cult film adaption of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, featuring Johnny Depp as Raoul.

Thompson’s novel, The Rum Diary, is also to appear at cinemas in 2011 with good friend Johnny Depp again playing lead role.

Profile: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones first formed in 1962 starting as a 6 piece rock band consisting of Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman.

First influenced by blues music they took inspiration from legendary singers Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. It wasn’t till 1965 when their album December’s Children showed the band in a new light of Rock music casting aside their more bluesy tones releasing songs like “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” and “Get Off of My Cloud”.

Original member Brian Jones who first led the band was quickly replaced by Jagger and Richards. His role in the band started to diminish and he soon developed a serious drug addiction. Jones, guitarist and harmonica player, became a liability when he was refused an American visa hindering the band’s efforts to tour abroad. In 1969 Jones ‘quit’ the band and weeks later was found dead in his swimming pool.

Brian Jones’ replacement, Mick Taylor, left in 1974 after only a few weeks of joining the band and was later replaced with long term band mate Ronnie Wood.

The band continued to perform their Stones in the Park concert in London, Hyde Park, and sang as a tribute to the death of Brian Jones. More than 250,000 fans attended.

Let it Bleed was the last album of the sixties to be released featuring such songs as “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Gimme Shelter”.

In 1969 the band played at the Altamont Speedway Festival, San Francisco, where the Hells Angels provided security. It came to an unfortunate end when fan, Meredith Hunter, was brutally attacked and stabbed to death when realising he was armed.

Despite the shocking events at the Altamont Speedway Festival, the Rolling Stones were key figures in the 60s ‘British Invasion’ and their success throughout the US and Europe only increased.

The Rolling Stones were branded “The Greatest Rock n’ Roll Band in the World” and have sold over 22 studio albums in the UK and an estimated 200 million albums have been sold worldwide. Rolling Stones magazine ranked the band number 4 in the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

In 2008 director Martin Scorsese filmed a movie-documentary called Shine a Light following part of the Rolling Stones’ “A Bigger Bang” tour. Band mates, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts, still continue to perform.

Thought I'd get another post in before the end of March.

The cracks are beginning to show upon every final year student's face. Tired eyed, cigarette smoking, non-sleeping students. Or perhaps thats just me...I doubt it.

There is pretty much only one month left and my hand-ins will be finito! I feel so happy to finally get this weight off my shoulders but I must admit it will be pretty sad handing in my final project to the SASC desk. Bon voyage!

It will be sweet breaking away the assignment chains and finally getting a chance to breath. Desperately in need of a holiday, ASAP!

Bonjour!

Apologies for the lack of blogging lately...I have no idea how long it has been but it feels vair long!

It has been all systems go on the career front applying for internships and doing uni work. I can't believe how calm it is all rolling.
In September I made a vow to keep on top of everything so I wont have another Spring freak out where the world seems like it is ending and I'm smoking 20 a day to keep sane. Nicht! Organisation is the key, and it seems to be working.

The social life has suffered a tad but it is totally worth it if it means progressing and making something of myself. I point blank refuse to be in the same position, 30 year-old, no longer further forward in life where getting hammered on a weekend feels like my only purpose. Hell fucking no.

On a softer note, enjoy this beautiful photograph.

To Buddhist, or not to Buddhist?

It dawned on me the other day I have about 10 weeks left at university and then I'm happily kicked out into the 'big peoples' world by Northumbria University...how rude.

Is it normal to feel so relaxed about it? Family and friends ask the stock question of 'what are you going to do next?' and quite honestly I've got no bloody idea. I feel more pressure and anxiety trying to answer the question than actually putting any of my degree into action!

For now there is a calm atmosphere in my mind surrounding careers, life, and the future. I prefer the 'let's see' or 'go with the flow' approach rather than the 'YOU MUST WORK AND HATE IT, RAHHH' path.

Perhaps a buddhist life is for me. I'd only need one long piece of orange cloth/slash tie (maybe another for wash day), a pillow to rest my boney ankles, and the open land to meditate and practice yoga for kicks.

I fear my sanity is slowly diminishing over these winter months. Every morning is such a chore to alight my bed and the cold wall of air that thrashes you after getting out of the shower is deathly!

There is no justifying how anyone can possibly say, "But Winter is nice you get to wrap up all warm..."

That is absolutely no incentive for me to be thrilled.

Perhaps the only thing worth while in Winter is my fur coat. Ahh coney. Forget the Faux, im staying vintage and true to my ancestors whilst riding through this menacing season covered in rabbit.

Last night my eyes lit up when I heard back to back tracks of Michael Jackson playing in Independent. It took only moments for Spade and I to pull out the moonwalk (drunk style) and perform inappropriate crotch grabbing movements (hahaha my goodness having flash backs!) plus Jade was wearing a trilby so it had to be done.

So anyway I was watching a documentary about him this afternoon and I came to realise nobody else in the world can pull of his style but him. Can you imagine a Chav successfully wearing a bejewelled glove and red leather trousers? No. They'd be a victim of abuse probably.

My dad scanned a lot of family photographs that belong to my Grandmother not long ago. Unfortunately there are quite a number of photos with unknown faces. My Grandparents themselves do not know who all the people on the photographs are as they were their parents photographs at one time. We may never know who they were and if the family line has spilt off even further.
The photos date back all the way to the 19th century at times and we are still eager to find out more information behind the faces of our ancestors.

There is one lady who's style caught my eye the first time I saw the 'Dog Days Are Over' music video...Miss Florence Welch of course.

Her style is elegant, feminine, with a hint of edginess to complete. She is not just a one of kind right now regarding style but musically Florence and the Machine are a much welcomed refreshing sound to your playlist.

Bonjour all!
I have neglected this blog for a number of days now due to the flu! Argh it was horrific but all is well now. Let the blogging resume!

It has come to my attention how hooked on sequins people are right now. I can not turn my head on a night out without being blinded by a circular disc of light! So for the sequin lovers out there here are some of my sparkly spandexes.

Good news everyone!

The children go back to school tomorrow so we can all go clothes shopping in peace! I literally can not wait to go shopping down a reasonably quiet street minus the surge of push chairs and overload of 16 and under kids consuming a quiet daytime wander.

Lets the sale shopping finally commence!

On another note...Mother bought me a book all about Audrey Hepburn and her style for Christmas. It is truely wonderful and I thought I would share with you all a few favourite photos from the book.

I hope you all have a wonderful 2010 and your hangover is pretty much gone by now...onto a new bottle of wine? Si si!

Ahh what a wonderful evening full of dancing and Jagermeister whilst embracing randoms at midnight(will post photos in due course).

Last night I watched 'Into The Wild' that Jade loaned me. She said I would love it and she wasn't half wrong. I fell in love with it!

The true story tells the life of Christopher 'supertramp' McCandless including his frustration of society and longing for freedom. He was such a great man with an inspirational story.

If you feel like your missing part of yourself right now, watch this and it should give you answers.

Alas I am here becoming another blog statistic.

I started this because I was encourage by my journalism lecturers to create a blog. Why not I thought? Its good to keep ahead of the game.

After much deliberation I decided that it is going to be fashion based.

I dedicate this one to my wardrobe that is currently bursting at the hinges full of newly bought clothes with labels on (that I will soon wear...)

Here is a peek at some new garments I bought of late.

This lacey delight was bought from Miss Selfridge for £12 in the sale. Lace really makes an outfit, so beautiful.
I am a huge boot fan its pretty much all I wear and these bad boys were £18 from Matalan. Cant be robbed! Plus very handy in this snowy weather right now.
